Gerald Killeen named principal of Athens High School amid a slate of campus changes. Teresa Casci awarded the Susan Park Scholarship for academic excellence during the awards period.
A Franklin County court was asked to issue an injunction to stop state penitentiary officials from barring newsmen accompanying a Senate inspection tour. Attorneys for several media outlets contend the rule violates the U S and Ohio constitutions and attack the prison rules as arbitrary. A compromise offer to allow one reporter to join the tour was rejected.
Georges Pompidou led the first round with 43.95 percent in continental France and will face Alain Poher in a June 15 runoff for the seven year presidency. Jacques Duclos won 21.53 percent for the Communists with Poher second at 23.44 percent. Other candidates trailed. De Gaulle’s resignation prompted the race as Poher pressed a nationalist campaign while Pompidou led a fast-paced nationwide drive.
Washington critics from both parties attack the Safeguard antimissile plan as Senator Saxbe argues the system creates fear of a gap. Senator Symington calls for public release of a chart supporting further research over deployment. Senator Sparkman predicts Nixon can win a majority with political effort.
Governor Nelson Rockefeller warned that student demonstrations in Latin America reflect an extremist minority threatening U S relations. He cited violence delaying his Venezuela stop during Nixon administration facts finding tour, part of a broader survey by Rockefeller and a team of experts.
Washington report by former officials and lawmakers calls Congress to reclaim oversight of the vast military industrial complex. It warns a unchecked system risks a permanent arms race and a hollow political order unless reforms curb overseas bases reduce the standing army and create new auditing and advisory mechanisms.
Dutch marines patrolled Willemstad Curacao after fierce rioting that left 70 percent of the business district ruined. Government reports cited two killed 100 wounded 196 arrested, with other sources listing four dead. Dutch forces from the Netherlands imposed a curfew and looted stores were burned while unions blamed Prime Minister Ciro Kroon.
A cool period is indicated Tuesday through Saturday in Ohio with temperatures averaging well below normal. Daytime highs will be in the lower to middle portions of the state and overnight lows likely upper teens to lower twenties in the north and lower teens in the south. Showers are possible Thursday and Friday with total precipitation around a quarter inch.
