Five Die in TNT Plant Blast Near McArthur
A dawn explosion at the Austin Powder Co plant east of McArthur killed five workers. Names identified include Duane Lowe 36 and Glen Pendleton 36 both of Athens. The explosion occurred about 15 minutes after start of operations in a wooden mixing kettle. Debris spread over 500 feet. most bodies were dismembered. Plant officials stated an accident and no further information was available. The facility employs about 200 people and has a history of blasts since 1937.
