Surveyor 1 achieved a precise first attempt landing in the Sea of Storms and sent back clear earthward images. The calm surface appeared smooth and suitable for a future astronaut descent, boosting the United States Apollo program ahead of later lunar missions.
The Surveyor craft touched down on the lunar crust at 2 17 37 a m EDT after a 63 hour journey from Cape Kennedy. Ground stations at Goldstone Cat Hen Madrid and Johannes burg continued to relay clearer images showing a small shadow of the craft and a rock, with hundreds more pictures expected before lunar night ends.
Hue surrendered to Premier Nguyen Cao Ky's forces without resistance from Buddhist-led rebels. The junta seized the radio station and key sites 400 miles northeast of Saigon after a May 23 Da Nang capture. U.S. air raids continued in the North as casualties rose, with 87 Americans killed in the May 28 week.

Rep Walter H Moeller announces a 48899 Office of Economic Opportunity grant to Jackson and Vinton counties for a dental care program. Jackson Vinton Community Action Inc will administer examinations for grade three to five students with about 800 children benefited, representing 94 percent of low income individuals in the area.

Columbia University researchers reported two findings suggesting viruses may initiate cancer. Virus like particles were found in healthy appearing cells around prostate cancer tissue, not in the cancer cells themselves, and these nearby cells appeared to grow at cancerous rates under ordinary light. Dr Myron Tannenbaum and Dr John Lattimer presented the work at a urology convention.
Meigs County farmer Dale Hill of Racine Route 2 sues Holmes Seed Co Canton claiming he ordered Golden Acre Cabbage Seed on Oct 10 1964 but harvested crop proved not Golden Acre. He alleges loss of field use profit and labor from the misidentified seed.
