In the town of Kettlewell the wealthy widower Rev Anthony Brent courts Mrs Barbara Temple, a lively widow, amid dinners and drives as parish life watches a tacit engagement form. His tactful pursuit meets her approving warmth as a rival curate’s joke stirs light tension.
Rector Brent learns his son in Australia plans to return home to woo a portrait, not a living woman. The tale follows the father’s amused reaction and a comic detour as he visits a dentist, who teases him about a Mrs Temple in Kettlewell and the age of the supposed beloved’s mother.
A tipsy Rector Brent confronts Mrs Barbara Temple with a false age claim and marriage scheme. She rebukes him, exposes the bluff, and turns the protest to comic ends, sending him humiliated from the room with the girls amused.
