Athens approves solar trash and recycling compactors downtown
Athens City Council approved a three year lease with Big Belly to place 24 compactors and six existing cans in the downtown area. The $50,000 yearly price will be paid from the trash fund, which has grown after hiring a litter officer. Officials say the move will cut downtown trash collection costs and reduce emissions, while some critics call it too expensive and prefer buying receptacles.

Man seeks dismissal in cat case over alleged abandonment
Tim Warga faces a misdemeanor animal abandonment charge in Athens County Municipal Court. Defense attorney Robert Toy seeks dismissal arguing the law is vague and that pressure from the public and City Council spurred the filing. Toy claims feral cats in trap neuter return programs should not be covered and questions what constitutes a domestic animal and ownership. The prosecution has not yet responded.
