Runaway on Rockrifle Road Injures Monroe Couple
ARWESS BROKE and RB M Monroe's horse ran away Sunday on Rockrifle road while returning to Athens. The harness broke on a steep hill causing the buggy to crash the horse. Mrs Monroe escaped with no injuries while Mr Monroe suffered bruises and the buggy was demolished. The shaft broke and pierced the horse's shoulder requiring Levi Kelly's help to remove it.

Death of Mrs Duckler at Bates Church
Mrs Jacob Duckler died Sunday at her Bates church home from lung trouble at age twenty four. She leaves a husband and many relatives. Public funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at Bates church with interment in the cemetery.

Mrs. G L Strahl Injured After Fall From Express near Willow Creek
Mrs. G L Strahl and Mrs. O L Strahl of King at Willow Creek in Canaan township were jolted Saturday evening when horses frightened near the Children's Home. Mrs Strahl was thrown from the velvet and dragged several feet, bruising her back. Homer Mansfield halted the express, and she was taken to Athens for medical care before returning home Sunday.

Family in Jail in July Arrests at House of Ill Repute
On complaint of Benjamin Minear Lizie Shipman and five daughters all colored were arrested and brought before Squire Taylor on a charge of keeping a house of ill repute. Isaac Decker, previously jailed on a related charge, was also taken. Lesker received 40 days and a $20 fine Lizzie Shipman 30 days and $15 fine the girls 18 days and $35 apiece. They were all sent to Athens and jailed by Constable Curtis.

Red Men Pay Tribute At Comrade Burch’s Grave

Cart accident injures Mrs Graham near south bridge
Miss Mary Dodge rode with Mrs A C Graham when the horse stumbled south of the south bridge Saturday evening. Miss Dodge escaped uninjured while Mrs Graham sustained bruises and could not leave her room Sunday though not seriously hurt. By Monday she could move about with difficulty and regain some strength.

Des Moines artist Jelone Crippen died after a protracted illness at the Home for the Aged. A former teacher, she gained renown for watercolors noted for fidelity and detail. Funeral services were held in Indianola with interment there after a Des Moines home remembrance. she was sister of the late Hiram Crippen. Thomas Ellis a prominent Dover township resident and former blacksmith and farmer died suddenly at his Chauncey home Monday evening at 7. He had been frail but mentally active and left a substantial estate. Born in Grantham Lincolnshire England on May 21 1317 he came to Dover at 25 and built a life through hard work. Surviving children Mary Fuller and Sarah Brige, two daughters, six grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Funeral today at 10 at his residence with Rev W A Roush. Burial in Nye Cemetery near Chauncey.

The Syndicate led by Mr Wilson wrapped up two weeks of meetings Sunday night with large crowds. He estimated about 2300 attendees across days and evenings, yielding 101 dollars from Sunday plus 89 dollars and a 15 dollar contribution totaling 173 dollars for the period. Converts and reclaimants numbered 23. The Wilson family then traveled to Porter in Gallia county for a week of rest before moving the Gospel tent to Athens. He plans another meeting in Albany in about six weeks and will return afterward.

Grind Stone Works Near Town Impacts Local Jobs
Grind Stone Works runs full time employing many men with a fine quality stone quarried on W. M. Beary Place about half a mile from town. The quarry is accessible and several saws were turned last week for use by a large company in grinding razors. Despite Western opposition these stones were of very coarse grit.

No mine here which for several years has been closed down has been reopened and active mining operations were begun this week. The Snowday Creek Coal Company owns it.
