Inmates in the Mansfield Reformatory laundry unwittingly thwarted a jail break by Edward Ralph and four others by pouring hot water into a sewer they used to crawl toward a yard manhole. Overheated, the group surfaced and were captured by guards who opened the manhole cover.
Italo Balbo Italy's air minister led 24 warplanes from New York in a record mass flight. The first group lifted from Jamaica Bay at 9 a.m. and the squadron headed north to Shediac New Brunswick, the initial port on the return voyage to Orbetello Italy.
In Columbus the Ohio State University board voted emeritus status for seven professors abolished 236 positions placed 73 on part time and implemented a third salary cut for the year to save about 652 057 dollars in payroll.
Dr B B Bryan president of Ohio University stated no changes seem necessary at present. He cited the favorable position of the university due to close cooperation with the State Department of Finance during the last two bienniums.
Over the next 18 months the university will cut salaries 3 to 10 percent on all pay above 1000 dollars annually. The budget eliminates 57 teaching positions, 127 junior teaching staff posts, and 52 non academic roles. Also 39 other employees are placed on part time.
