AP survey finds shoppers stockpiling as price freezes lift, with meat and eggs up and vegetables to cost more this summer though supplies rise.
President Nixon faced a constitutional clash as he refused to release Watergate tape recordings and documents. Subpoenas were issued by the Senate Watergate Committee and Special Counsel Archibald Cox, with Nixon to respond by Thursday. The dispute may advance to the Supreme Court over presidential withholding of evidence.
Senate investigators pressed Ehrlichman to supply tapes and papers as part of the Watergate probe. Strachan testified Haldeman knew secret intelligence was used against Democrats and defended John Dean III against Magruder's perjury claim, noting Dean never lied to him.

In Benghazi Libya hijackers of a Japanese jumbo jet exploded charges after passengers and crew, about 140 people aboard, escaped via emergency chutes. Libyan troops arrested the four hijackers following the attack after a three day crisis that began last Friday with a flight from Amsterdam to Dubai and Damascus before reaching Libya.
The Ozark Air Lines turboprop crash near St Louis killed 36 people on a night storm. Pilot Arvid Linke said he believed a tornado and lightning struck the Fairchild 227 after departing Nashville. FAA records show the plane vanished near Lambert Airport at about 600 feet. Eight survivors were reported in area hospitals.
Pan Am jetliner crashes in the Pacific. 78 killed and one survivor. Among the dead are 36 Americans including four from New Zealand and one stewardess Beth Williams. The lone survivor is James Campbell of Madawaska Ontario. search continues.
