Athens officials urged mediation in the General Telephone Co and Communication Workers of America strike. Mayor Donald Barrett met two hours with GT and CWA reps to offer city mediation while insisting the city will not judge or intervene. Separate incidents near the strike included brick damage to a supervisor’s home and picket harassment during cable repairs. Negotiations in Marion were to resume soon as the strike began July 16.
