Highlights include 1870 bromine production by Dr. Herman Stiern and Herman Lerner, the West Virginia Bromine Company, Michael J. Owens who invented the auto bottle blowing machine, tragic deaths at a McCardle family home, Lovell’s early coal and salt industry, and homes once hosting Ulysses S. Grant and James A. Garfield along with Virgil A. Lewis. The town’s 1856 charter by Virginia’s General Assembly ties to George W. Mason.
