Manners and listening build or ruin social impressions
The author warns that arriving home thinking you impressed your dinner partner may reveal you are a bore. A reputation for charm depends on listening as much as talking, and attentive listening earns esteem.

Lessons in Bridge NEEDLEWORK by Oswald Jacoby
East tried to deter South from a spade contract as North showed strength in black suits. The deal implies four spades as the likely contract. Opening heart lead, dummy’s queen is played to force the ace. East continues hearts. West would over-ruff with the jack of spades. South misreads by wasting dummy’s queen spade, failing to guard against a second heart ruff. South should lead from his king or enter dummy with a club to start trumps. This allows the declarer to draw trumps with one loss.
