Niagara Falls July 18 16 year old William Kondrat of Chatham New Jersey swam the Niagara River rapids from the Whirlpool to the Gorge crest. He rode the river crest carried downstream for more than a mile before reaching the eddy and making shore exhausted. He was held by police on a vagrancy charge after the feat, which rivals those of famed divers of the past.
Keith Dubois a 19 year old college student and honor man was found three miles west of Rochester Indiana after being held captive since Sunday. He had been drugged and terrorized by kidnappers who released him without ransom as a posse closed in. He remained hysterical and could recall few details beyond being forced to inhale a drug.
The Crusaders and the Ohio State Dis tributors' Association urge Governor White to veto a beer cap tax law. It would add $6.48 per barrel on beer to existing $6 total taxes, making $12.48 per barrel, plus 2 cents per bottle and about 50 cents per case.
Federal intervention was seen as possible as a strike continued at the Wheeling Structural Steel Company. The plant worked on structural steel for the new post office at Columbus, drawing federal interest.
Athens County boards approve a reduced 1934 budget cutting county levies by 30,400 while total spending reaches 378,319. NOVOSIBIRSK Siberia July 18 Wiley Post, world flyer, took off at 12:55 a m for Irkutsk aiming to refuel and inspect then on to Khabarovsk. He was 17 hours 4 minutes ahead of the record with Harold Gatty two years earlier and must return to New York by 8 01 p m EST Sunday to beat that mark. Post, an iron man, had slept once since leaving New York arriving from Moscow at 11 19 p m EST Monday.
Miss Pearl French, secretary of the Athens County Red Cross, reports receipt of Economy Act veteran benefit forms and invites veterans to confer with her. Spanish American War and peacetime forms require separate orders. WWI disability must arise within a year of discharge, with physician statements detailing first exam date, treatments, home visits, diagnosis and basis. Forty four cases reopened in past three days.
Washington July 18 Agriculture Department officials warn of rapid cotton price rises. Between March 1 and July 10 New York wholesale prices for print cloth, sheeting, and yarn rose about 112 percent while raw cotton climbed 77 percent. Officials say wholesale levels could justify 18 cents per pound for raw cotton though it has hovered near 11 cents. Some believe wage costs under the textile code and a 4.2 cent per pound processing tax due August 1 have been discounted in advance by the trade.
An American spokesman warned the United States may skip the resumed World Economic Conference if gold standard nations block possible agreements without currency stabilization. He said Europe’s sincerity would be tested by drafts on silver and copper, with focus on wheat and silver deals.
Hocking Mine of the Hocking Valley Mine Company resumed operations this morning after near three months idle. About 300 men worked today and officials, while noncommittal on future prospects, said the full force would work two or three days weekly for the next few weeks.
In Kovno Lithuania the government prepared to render in death the honors hoped for in life to aviators Stephen Darius and Stanley Girenas who died crashing near Soldin Germany on a New York to Kovno flight. A state funeral was ordered and airplanes were to transport the bodies to Kovno after a mourning ceremony at the Kovno Airdrome where 10 000 people awaited the fliers.
Franie Heavener files for divorce from Fred Heavener in Athens County Common Pleas Court alleging repeated severe beatings by the husband. The petition cites numerous instances of extreme cruelty as grounds for the dissolution of the marriage.
Six people were injured when a Sunset Motor Lines sedan traveling between Cleveland and New York overturned twice on a curve at Southington on Monday. All injuries were non life threatening and the vehicle sustained extensive damage.
SANTA MONICA Calif Will Hayes discusses ideas for Nevada to expand its marriage industry if divorces are already strong. He suggests guaranteeing a wife or husband after six weeks residency as a provocative policy thought amid talk about Wiley Post’s international flight and other casual remarks.
Athens County farm agent T. H. Johnson urges farmers to join the National Farm Relief Bill acreage reduction to prop up wheat prices. Extension agents will meet in McArthur Friday to discuss the educational program and the processing tax aiding farmers with reduced acreage. Athens County, with 32500 acres planted and average output of 50 000 bushels, will form a local committee to oversee the plan while Kreitler, Meigs County agent, chairs the conference.
Sheriff Charles Stratton and deputies hunted four men after a Sunday night attack on Henry Nice owner of a Route 3 southeast Athens filling station. A Buick touring car with Idaho plates linked to suspects could not be verified. Chief Bateman said four men were arrested Monday in a Buick touring car and held for questioning.
Harold and Marold Jewett brothers from West Washington Street fought with each other Monday night. Harold showed head injuries from a brick blow. Police jailed both and they await hearings before Mayor Robert B. Wood. Arresting officers were Charles Maple and Leslie Bradfield. Frank Gabriel of Carbondale and Arthur Graham of Athens also jailed. Gabriel charged with intoxication. Graham cited for operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated.
Ora Slater, famed Cincinnati detective, arrives in Gallipolis to question Frank Ely and others in the Ruby Ely death case. Ely suspects Elida Ely and Frieza implicated. Slater teams with Prosecutor Cherrington and Sheriff Hatfield to recheck alibis as the crew release questioned suspects.
In New York July 18 the repeal effort moved to Alabama and Arkansas as the first Southern states to vote on the Twenty First Amendment. Tennessee scheduled a vote Thursday, with prospects of two triumphs among three states to delay repeal to 1954. Dry forces seek to block repeal. wet forecasts predicted in both states though tight results expected. Seventeen states have voted to repeal the Eighteenth Amendment, while no states are listed against repeal.
Elliott Roosevelt, second son of the President, flew to Chicago from Reno to meet Texas debutante Misa Ruth Googins amid a recent divorce from his wife at Minden, Nevada. He said the rendezvous was possible but urged not to draw conclusions.
The Ohio State Director of Industrial Relations said a woman will soon join executives administering the new minimum wage law, effective July 11. He favored female appointment over men and has not chosen yet. AKRON July 18. A weather delay may keep the Settle Piccard stratosphere balloon grounded until next week. Lieut. Commander T G W Settle, back from Chicago, said the Wednesday tentative flight date is abandoned due to forecast weather unsuitable for cosmic ray observations. Settle will rejoin Jean Piccard in Chicago to install instruments in the seven foot seated sphere for their planned ascent.
Martins Ferry July 18 The Wheeling Traction Company offering electric railway assets for auction to the highest bidder on Friday July 21. Tri state district citizens led by Wheeling seek to buy the company holdings to continue operating the rail line. Company employees have started a fund by contributing portions of their semi monthly salaries to aid in the purchase.
Washington reports indicate continued belief among administration circles that Secretary of the Treasury William H. Woodin would resign before summer's end despite official denials. Some say disclosure of his bargain stock purchases from J P Morgan & Co may push him to retire politically.
Booming commodity prices lift farmers’ cash and potential returns on cotton, corn, wheat, and oats by about 2.15 billion dollars since March 1.
