Local items report thefts of vegetables, wheat harvest progress, and a Saturday Sabbath School picnic led by E. F. Glazier. Also noted are suicides, drownings, political shifts, law provisions, and community deaths across Ohio and nearby states with many named individuals and places.
Reports from Columbus and Athens confirm Rev. W. H. Scott D D. accepts the presidency of the State University. He is praised as a finished scholar and able administrator who previously led Ohio University at Athens. Trustees are hailed for the selection and welcome him to the Capital City.
Secretary Chamberlain, acting as special statistical agent for Ohio, reports to the U S Department of Agriculture. The June data summarize county returns on crops including corn acreage 103 percent of full average, wheat 22,300,000 bushels at 57 percent of last year, and various condition and area figures for rye oats barley clover timothy pasture orchards vineyards beans tobacco Irish potatoes sweet potatoes sorghum with mixed conditions and scales.
On July 3 a gathering at Mrs Mary E Quigly home in Nelsonville celebrated her forty seventh birthday with friends and relatives. Gifts came from Mr and Mrs Wilmarth of Salina Mr and Mrs Russell of Carbon Hill Mr and Mrs Dawly of Greendale Mrs David Dyson of Athens Mr and Mrs J F Camp Rev and Mrs Frost Mrs Della Swackhamer Misses Frost and Camp. A sumptuous dinner followed.
Posters announce a Republican meeting at Athens City Hall tomorrow night with speakers Hon John Welch Gen C H Grosvenor and Hon Chas Townsend. The listing urges voters to attend and invites ladies to contribute their presence to the event amid current canvass interest.
The notice promotes the Pleasant Valley Seminary reopening on August 21 under Principal Prof. Edgar Heermans. It praises Heermans as an educator of marked ability and success and asserts students will gain highly satisfactory advantages from his instruction.
