A USDA report predicts bigger corn and soybean crops this year, aiding the Nixon administration in curbing price rises. While grocery prices may not fall, larger harvests could temper increases in meat milk and poultry costs and enable rationing of protein feeds to foreign buyers.
USDA analysts project a 6 percent rise in corn acres and 24 percent more soybeans for 1973 harvest with a record wheat crop already under way. Officials say favorable weather could yield abundant crops, easing feed costs and supporting expanded cattle hog poultry and dairy production next fall.
Washington AP An informed Treasury source says Phase 4 of the anti inflation program will be announced by week’s end with the earliest possible reveal Thursday It follows the 60 day price freeze initiated by President Nixon on June 13 Cabinet discussions are expected Nixon’s wage and price controls phase out debate was urged by the Labor Management Advisory Committee urging a firm end to controls to tackle inflation.
A major bill to end Ohio immunity from suits heads to a House floor vote with sponsors confident of approval. The plan would replace the Sundry Claims Board with a Court of Claims hearing claims of 1000 dollars or more, with a single judge and optional three judge panel for major cases. Decisions could be appealed to higher state courts.
Former Atty. Gen. John Mitchell testifies before the Senate Watergate committee denying lies under oath. He disputes Magruder Dean Stans and others over wiretapping, campaign decisions, and hush money payments. He maintains prior approved campaign actions while questioning earlier sworn accounts.
The Senate Watergate committee planned closed door talks on subpoenaing documents from the White House. Mitchell denied approving wiretapping, viewing logs, or discussing the affair with Nixon. Magruder reaffirmed his testimony that Mitchell approved the break in at a March 30 1972 meeting in Key Biscayne Florida. Nixon refused to testify, citing separation of powers.
A Varig Boeing 707 carrying 117 people crashed near Palaiseau south of Paris. Airport officials reported there were no survivors. In Washington the House passed a farm bill amendment capping subsidies at 20000 dollars for wheat cotton and feed grain. The dollar rose as nine central banks agreed to add 6.25 billion to a swap fund to support the currency.
France readies a nuclear test in the South Pacific as a government ban on flights and shipping in the test zone takes effect. The government refuses to halt the tests despite a World Court injunction and broad international protests.
Weather forecast calls for clear and cool conditions tonight with lows in the upper 50s to low 60s. Thursday will be sunny with highs in the low to mid 80s.
