The Ath ens Redpath Chautauqua opens with a near full crowd for its first night. Churches joining for service at the Big Tent mark Sunday program. Dunbar male quartet and bell ringers performed Friday, finishing with Onward Christian Soldiers before Elwood T. Bailey spoke on All Aboard.
The Sunday schedule lists a 3 P M community lecture "Let s Get Together" by Charles G Jordan and a 7 30 P M sermon "Religion and the Nation" by Dr George W Mead A union meeting of all churches is announced with no evening services in Athens churches
Dr. Paul W. Ward opened a morning lecture series on social inheritance and community life. He urged citizens to build a roadbed of human values with patriotism and self effort, warned on home life decay, and highlighted children programs and a student pageant.
President Harding, en route from the Summit House, presses on toward Washington with intent to reach the capital by evening. The motor journey, via Hagerstown, Md, aims for a late lunch and dinner in the capital, driven by urgent coal strike telegraphs from Herbert Hoover and others.
Fire apparatus raced to the Hollani America Line dock at Fifth Street Hoboken today to tackle a blaze aboard the trans Atlantic liner New Amsterdam tied at the pier. The incident disrupted dockside activity but no injuries are reported.
In Chicago on July 8 a man was stabbed six times and another was beaten with black jacks near the Burnside shops of the Illinois Central Rail road. Victims Andrew Polish and Michael Kukyno were returning from work and the assault is linked to striking railway shopmen. Earlier that day six sticks of dynamite were found in coal in the yards of the Atchison Topeka and Santa Fe road and are being screened for further explosives.

July 8 in Ira Ohio Elmer Cover 12 accidentally shot sister Wilma 8 as they walked home from the grocery. Elmer, who then shot himself, is in critical condition while Wilma is expected to recover. In a separate incident two year old Albin Pukantik was wounded in the chest by 11 year old Btera Steyck after finding a neighbor's .22 caliber revolver. the child is expected to survive.
Leon Werler aged 22 from Massillon and Ellis E. Ortz aged 21 of Baltic were instantly killed near Uniontown when Werler attempting to pass between two cars drove into the path of a fast Akron Canton interurban at 11 30 last night. Witnesses said Werler was driving.

Pittsburg jury acquitted James J Flannery of the February murder of his wife after 15 nights and 14 days of deliberation. He testified he mistook his wife for a burglar and fired a shot at a shadowy form in their home, then surrendered to police after her scream.
