President Harding leaves Columbus to push renewed coal production amid a national famine risk. He favors a peaceful settlement but signals possible government seizure if miners and operators fail to agree. Ohio operators warn non union rivals keep wage gaps, threatening markets and employment.
The Athens postmaster reports rising sales of U. S. treasury savings certificates with June totals of 16 775 dollars in Athens and 10 150 dollars in Nelsonville. Certificates redeemable after five years yield 25 percent more than purchase price and face no state or local taxes. Issued in 1000 100 and 25 dollar denominations, they are registrable and considered safe. They can be redeemed before maturity if needed.
In Columbus on July 7 Federal Judge Sater signaled a hearing on a permanent injunction to bar striking coal miners from interfering with workers loading slack and trespassing at Consolidated Coal properties near New Straitsville Perry county. A restraining order against Ohio United Mine Workers officials and members was already issued. A separate hearing before Judge Later was scheduled for tomorrow on Wayne Coal near New Straitsville. Judge Donahue in Cincinnati will hear Catherine Coal Stripping Corp in Belmont county for a similar injunction. Sater has reinstated a prior restraining order on that company’s properties.
Rev. Daniel McGurk of the First Methodist church of Athens recalls the 1906 Redpath chautauqua in the Midwest circuit covering Iowa Wisconsin and Minnesota. He notes crude tents and stagecraft but strong programs including the Dixie Jubilee Singers and an impersonator from Chicago.

About 25 strike breakers recruited in Cincinnati and Dayton joined striking workers in Lima Ohio, leaving few loyalists on picket. No shop operations occurred as leaders assert new arrivals refused work and were allegedly restrained by private detectives while en route and upon arrival.
