No Serious Flood Threat Expected In Hocking River
Rain now poses no serious flood danger says John W. Millar soil conservationist with Athens Soil & Water Conservation Service. He notes a two inch in 24 hour rain after the January snow would have produced a major flood. The Federal Valley watershed flood control program includes dams in Margaret Creek and Rush Creek areas. Millar cites 25 percent potential flood control once all projects finish, but not full protection due to costs and needed relocations. The U.S. Corps of Engineers designs a rerouting project for the Hocking River costing about four million dollars and involving an earth levee channel widening the river path east of Athens.
