Strawberry Growers Should Mulch Plants
Athes County strawberry growers begin mulching their plants per Ross Wright county extension agent. Place mulch now while ground is frozen to hold snow and prevent heat from freeze thaw cycles. Corn fodder makes an excellent mulch with fewer weed seeds than straw, which is second choice. Manure adds weed seeds and should be avoided. Apply mulch now and leave until freeze danger passes, delaying blossoming until after the final freeze.
