Hearings begin this week on a bill to legalize public employee strikes in Ohio. Rep. Thomas P. Gilmartin introduces the measure, which would repeal the Ferguson Act and require arbitration to settle disputes between public employers and employees. The bill gets its first hearing at 8 p.m. Tuesday in the House Commerce and Labor Committee.
The Legislature plans hearings on a strike compensation bill if jobless for 90 days as it weighs a $91.3 million school funding surplus. The Senate opens its fourth week with a 7 30 p m floor session and no floor bills. the House meets at 11 a m Tuesday. Committees in both chambers will review identical Democratic leadership bills to boost per pupil funding by 40 dollars in the final quarter. The Senate Finance Committee led by Sen. The Commerce Department reports that oil price gains pushed the United States to a $3.065 billion annual trade deficit in 1974, the second largest on record, with December alone adding a $606 million shortfall. The year’s deficit topped 1973’s totals and was the largest since 1972.
