House Democrats seek to block President Ford's oil tariff increase by attaching a delaying measure to the debt ceiling bill. The Ways and Means Committee opens debate on the debt limit, seen as veto-proof, while Ford defends the tariff and supports fuel allocation with rationing as a last resort.

Gov. James A. Rhodes is set to sign a bipartisan measure extending unemployment benefits from 26 to 39 weeks before the January 26 federal deadline. The act will let Ohio access about 6 million dollars in extra federal funds and provide roughly 75 dollars weekly to about 20 000 Ohioans who exhausted regular benefits. The House also received 16 new bills including an 11.5 billion two year budget plan from former Gov. John Gilligan.
