Floods lingered with several deaths and millions in damage as cold air moves in. Evacuees return to silted homes while thousands remain in shelters across Columbus Newark Mount Vernon and other Ohio cities.
In Columbus after floods, the Red Cross opened four emergency evacuation centers at two high schools, a Naval Reserve training center, and an Elks Club. About 1000 people, including many children, received meals from Starling Junior High School and other sites, with supplies arriving by truck to feed the crowd. Dwight Ward, 5, noted he eats a lot.
President Eisenhower urged the Republican National Committee to maintain a continuous year-round campaign, not a hibernating one, to project progressive leadership. He backed Meade Alcorn’s plan for a year-around campaign staff and a nonstop effort across all 365 days.
SEATTLE Wash William A Egan Alaska's young Democratic governor who has been hospitalized since his inauguration was reported resting comfortably today Dr Henry Bosshard resident surgeon at the hospital where Egan underwent an emergency operation Tuesday said he looked in on the governor late in the evening and found him still holding his own Egan given only a 50 50 chance to recover when he was operated on for a bowel obstruction and paralysis of the abdomen showed some improvement Wednesday afternoon Egan remained on the hospital's critical list and doctors said it would be several days before the outcome was assured.
The Navy introduces a submarine simulator, a training and combat decoy built by Clevite Corp at its ordnance plant in Cleveland. Eleven feet long and one foot in diameter, it resembles a torpedo and mimics submarine noises to fool enemy detection systems.
Carl Switzer known as Alfalfa from Our Gang and Reg Ular Fellers was shot to death during a money dispute in San Fernando California. Police reported an argument with another man preceded the fatal shooting. Switzer had a later comeback with The Little Rascals television reruns and appeared in Too Many Parents Wild and Woolly and Mrs Wiggs of the Cabbage Patch.
Columbus Ohio report states the state fair manager post likely to go to a man as 20 applications include no women. Agriculture Director Robert H Terhune and William L Coleman plan to review all entries ahead of a decision by the Ohio State Board of Agriculture at the Ohio Fairgrounds. Neither younger children could swim. The rescue occurred near St. Louis in frigid conditions and ended without serious injuries.
Cape Canaveral Florida reports the Army says the 13th Jupiter intermediate range ballistic missile hit its target after a 1700 mile flight over the Atlantic. The first tactical model of the 6 foot rocket flew successfully Wednesday night. Chrysler built the Jupiter and earlier units were assembled at Redstone Arsenal Huntsville Alabama. The Jupiter resembles the NATO bound operation version set for Europe.
Lebanon Missouri authorities have given up hope of finding Willard Jones Jr a 3 year old missing since Saturday in the Ozark Mountain region. About five thousand searchers at one time failed to locate him as freezing temperatures blanketed the area near his farm home ten miles south of Lebanon.

A G Hayes of the Machinists denounces the president's wage price policies saying wage rates are not to blame for inflation and that profits and prices fuel inflation. The group presses that wages are low relative to costs and profits.

An Air Force KB50 refueling plane from the 622nd Air Refueling Squadron crashed shortly after taking off from England Air Force Base in Alexandria Louisiana. The crew of six is believed dead as the plane failed to gain altitude and crashed four miles northwest of the base at 4 42 am. The aircraft exploded into flames and scorched railroad tracks near nearby homes.
Boris Pasternak, 69, once warned by the Soviet government against leaving the country to accept the Nobel Prize, reportedly agrees to a six week lecture tour of the United States and Britain. Spanish author Jose Vilallonga and Prof. Philip Hallie of Vanderbilt are coordinating, with assurances from diplomatic channels.
