Ohio lawmakers push a compulsory automobile inspection bill but Governor DiSalle doubts the impact on highway safety and questions whether defective drivers rather than cars cause crashes. The session also introduces death penalty reform, constitutional amendments, and various policy changes including voting age, bond issues, and election day timing.
Hearings were arranged today on housing bills pushed by Democratic sponsors as the first major action of the new Congress. Senate Banking Committee begins hearings Thursday and the House starts January 28 with brief sessions. The measures seek about three billion dollars in federal grants and authorizations for housing programs, loans, and easier FHA financing. The proposal expands beyond Eisenhower budget aims and faces Republican skepticism over a possible presidential veto.
In Hurlock Maryland 5 year old Mark Bryan walked a mile to find help for his mother Elaine Bryan after her car skidded on ice and overturned. He found Jerome Thomas who aided them and Mrs Bryan was not seriously injured.
Columbus director Everett S. Preston named Lawrence E. Fischer of Toledo as personnel administrator in the Ohio Highway Department. He also appointed John W. Hagan as Division II acting engineer and Max R. Farley as Division I0 engineer, with offices at Marietta.

Sam Howard 35 escaped from Hardin County jail in Kenton after pepper was tossed into Sheriff Verland Shaffer’s eyes during pursuit. He called his children to say goodbye before a 17 year grand larceny sentence at Ohio Penitentiary. He was found in Lima at 2:30 a.m. with driver James Conley’s help.
SEATTLE Alaskans prayed for their first elected governor William A. Egan 44 after emergency intestinal surgery. Doctors say he rests with a desperate chance to recover while Secretary of State Hugh J. Wade 56 a Democrat handles state affairs.
A flaming engine led 11 crewmen to bail out from a two engine Neptune training mission 50 miles northeast of Kansas City. The plane crashed and burned in a pasture near Ottawa, Kansas, but all aboard landed safely after drifting through a snowstorm. The aircraft originated at Glenview Naval Air Station and was en route to San Diego when the engine failure occurred.
A sandstorm at White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico created electrically charged dust particles. Winds gusting to 65 mph caused dust to lodge in alert system relays and trigger an air raid alert on Tuesday. The incident highlights how high winds and fine dust can interfere with signaling equipment.
Charles Town West Virginia Dr Bonney Youngblood 77 an agricultural economist who researched in the Southwest died Tuesday after a weeklong illness He served as an economist for the U S Department of Agriculture for 21 years
Newark Ohio Mrs Noreen King 28 and her son Steven 1% suffocated in a flame swept home Tuesday. The child lay in his mother's arms when firemen found them. Mrs King reportedly tried to rescue her son from a second floor bedroom.
Russell William Eden, three, died Tuesday from scalds after reportedly turning on hot water while seated in a bathtub awaiting a bath. He was the son of Mr and Mrs Charles Eden of near Zanesville.
Don J. Young Sr., 74, a longtime Norwalk attorney since 1907 and brother of U. S. Senator Stephen M. Young, died Tuesday in Norwalk.

Anastas I. Mikoyan spent a night at U S Naval Air Base Argentia Newfoundland after a Scandinavian Airlines jet carrying the Soviet deputy premier diverted with two engines out. The plane landed at Argentia to fix an emergency. no sabotage suspected. 35 passengers and 14 crew were aboard. a replacement plane was arranged to fetch the passengers.

Lima State Hospital officials ruled 20 year old David Smith legally sane after he was indicted on first degree murder for the December 16 killing of 24 year old Janice Porter. Porter was shot to death in her father in law’s home just north of Columbus.
The 80 year old poet Carl Sandburg was awarded an honorary Doctor of Letters by Upsala College in East Orange New Jersey. He delivered a forceful speech citing poetry politics and people and ended with songs. He complained modern poetry lacks unity and referenced the Civil War And Arkansas governor Orval Faubus. He quipped about heat generation saying they are neither a generation nor are they beat.
Argentine President Arturo Frondizi arrives in Washington after a victory at home where his government ended a national strike linked to Communists and Peronists. In the capital he meets Secretary of State Dulles and addresses a joint session of Congress.
