Washington reports firm letters urging continued operation of the Muskingum River locks to maintain river traffic. Marietta Concrete, Dravo Corp, and Muskingum River Gravel Co push for navigation continuation citing economic gain and coal transport plans. Senate committee instructed engineers to run locks through year end to assess local traffic needs.
East Ohio Gas Co notified 732 industrial customers today of a roughly ten percent rise in natural gas rates. Citing higher wholesale gas costs, steel pipe price hikes, and rising taxes, the company said this is the first industrial rate increase since 1942 and that current rates require no government approval due to existing contracts. Future expansion may be limited by government pipe restrictions.
San Francisco reports Representative Peter F. Mack of Illinois, who flew homeward from a globe girdling tour in a small single engine plane, says American prestige in the Orient is law. He began the flight October 7 as a goodwill tour and found American standing highest in Turkey and the Orient, though people worldwide are appreciating U S efforts.
Steubenville reports Dillonvale villagers wary to drink water after tests showed contamination last Friday. Chlorine supply exhausted, Mayor Hector Leon borrowed from Martins Ferry, resulting in eight times the normal chlorine level at the water plant.
Thamas Aaron, 29, of Lowellsite, died from burns after a kerosene stove exploded Sunday at the Youngstown Sheet and Tube Co plant.
Cleveland detectives shot and killed 19 year old Jesse Mull after a gas station entered by breaking a window during a burglary spree. Officer Tuite fired a 12 gauge shotgun when the youth ignored orders to stop. Detectives Walsh and Tuite were in a back room when the shooting occurred.
Former communist Charles Baxter testified to the Ohio American Activities Commission that about 1700 Reds are in Ohio and warned the party plans to operate secretly. He outlined regional concentrations, focal points in Youngstown and Gary, and alleged aims of violent overthrow tied to a world conspiracy. Baxter said he was a member from 1927 to 1945 before testifying at a deportation hearing.
MUNSAN-TAPi The Allies accused communist negotiators of seeking military advantage in Korea and pressing for forced repatriation of all prisoners of war. Rear Adm. R. E. Libby rejected the demar and warned against coercive conditions as talks over armistice supervision in Panmunjom entered a 14 minute subcommittee session.
Washington reports Michael DiSalle plans to announce whether he will seek the Democratic nomination for the U S Senate seat held by Republican Jon Bricker of Ohio. He weighs returning to Toledo, private industry pay, or remaining OPS director, amid family and political pressures.
Russian UN delegate Malik was invited to make an official visit to Egypt. Azzam Pasha hosted a Paris dinner with Malik and other officials, asserting Russia’s support for Egypt’s liberty. Malik will succeed Vishinsky as UN Assembly delegate and leaves for Moscow after the sixth UN General Assembly session.
Putnam oil producers of Marietta report three test gas wells shot near Watertown twenty nine miles west of Marietta. A second well was expected next Friday and a third the following week. Original strike Jan 16 involved three 43 1/4 foot wildcat wells in Belpre and Troy Townships, 1&8 miles apart.
Colfax California lost a hero when a rail passenger died from a heart condition caused by over-exertion during a week long snowbound nightmare aboard the City of San Francisco. A bomber veteran known as Gold helped shelter and feed 426 stranded passengers, making multiple trips with a Snowcat to bring emergency food and medicines and to dig the vehicle free from deep drifts. Charlie Sime aided the party by supplying 400 pounds of emergency rations.
Extended forecast shows temperatures averaging below normal with highs around 33 in the north and 43 in Ely, and a low near 18 in Perth. Colder Wednesday, continued cold Thursday and Friday, brief warming later, and snow flurries tonight, Wednesday, and late Friday or Saturday. Snow possible in the period with scattered flurries.

Ohio plans two new hunting and fishing preserves in the northeast and southwest. Director A W Marion said locations will not be disclosed to avoid price increases. The northeast site would lie between Akron and Cleveland with about 75 percent federal funding and the rest from the state. The state currently operates 148 public hunting and fishing areas totaling 490000 acres. Marion cited watershed and water control aims and potential fall flooding to improve duck hunting.
An Ohio National Guard division of about 80 men arrived by rail at a Louisiana training camp. Major General Leo Kreber will conduct three weeks of intensive training. The unit includes 1040 Korean combat veterans and football star Janowicz of Ohio State, with housing in trailers and more waiting for completion.
