Unbalanced women to men ratio fuels teacher shortage
COLUMBUS Ohio AP says nearly three times as many girls want to become teachers as boys, boosting Ohio’s shortage. Miami University placement chief H I Von Haden cites admissions bias toward men, higher education dropouts after marriage, and a 75 25 female-to-male ratio as key factors. He urges priority admission for those certain to pursue shortage areas like elementary teaching, home economics, and special education, while noting dormitory limits at residential colleges reduce potential teacher candidates.
