President Eisenhower told Congress that U.S. prosperity can continue through 1960 and beyond if the budget stays balanced, inflation is curbed, and debt reduced. He urged a large budget surplus to cut the federal debt and pressed for removal of the 4.4 percent interest ceiling on federal bonds.
President Eisenhower enters his eighth and last year in office hopeful that his world peace drive yields real results in the next 12 months. Friends say he enjoys his second term more, rejects lame duck labels, and believes not running again could work to his advantage amid high popularity polls.
John G Crosley aged two, son of Mr and Mrs Carroll Crosley of Lima Ohio, died Monday night after swallowing aspirin while visiting relatives in Kinmundy and Farina. The incident occurred during a family visit to Kinmundy and Farina.
A Fresno 13 year old, Helen Jackson, made 462 long distance calls to Los Angeles in December 1958. Pacific Telephone Co. agreed to forgive the bill after the widowed mother Myrtle Jackson admitted liability but could not pay. The pad lock stays on the home phone amid the investigation.
A large majority of the 1100 delegates at the Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen convention on Tuesday agreed to strike the color reference from the organization’s constitution, removing racial language from the text.
Cleveland politics see a rift as Gov. Michael V. DiSalle and Cuyahoga County Democratic Chairman Ray T. Miller Sr. announce separate delegate slates for the Democratic national convention. Miller breaks with DiSalle over pledges and vows a slate in four districts plus at-large delegates, targeting Kennedy.
ANKARA Turkey AP Fifty eight persons are dead or missing after a Scandinavian Airlines Caravelle crashed near Ankara and a U S Navy P4M plane disappeared over Turkey. The Ankara crash killed 42 aboard and the Navy plane, flying from Rota to Adana, had sixteen aboard with no survivors reported.
In a Los Angeles courtroom a jail inmate on furlough, Jack Cody, 29, testified about manipulating Carole Tregoff with a false death tale to trigger violence. The case involves Dr. R Bernard Finch, 42, and his mistress Barbara Jean Finch, 36, accused in the July murder of Barbara's husband or lover’s wife, with Miss Tregoff as a witness link and motive explored under tense cross examination.
James A. Werner left an estate totaling 90000. Art Lewis West Virginia University head football coach and Werner nephew appears among heirs at law. Estate filed in Meigs County Probate Court. Werner died Jan 3 aged eighty, never married, long railroad service.
A Navy photographer reports sighting three Soviet ships southwest of Hawaii during Jan. 14–15 patrols. The vessels Sibir Sudian and Sakhalin moved in line then formed a triangular pattern six miles apart, with white bubble-like structures on their bows and flags flying.
Washington reports Prime Minister Kishi says Japan is prepared to join the expanded effort to raise living standards in less developed countries. In Columbus, the Ohio AFL-CIO announces a ten meeting program starting Feb 13 to coordinate labor political activity across 10 districts with a Portsmouth stop on Feb 28.

Investigators seek the cause of a Capital Airlines Viscount crash near Holdcraft Virginia in which all 50 aboard perished. The plane appeared to fall straight down into a swampy ravine and struck trees without signs of a conventional impact as CAB teams inspect wreckage over two to three weeks.
In Cincinnati a 78 year old widow, Mrs. Martha W. Schaefer, was carried to jail on a stretcher after refusing to accompany officers to a court session. The jail stay lasted about three hours before she voluntarily entered Judge Gilbert Bettman’s courtroom. State license officials had pursued surrender of her driving permit since last May due to poor vision.
Baltimore police testified that 16 year old Robert H. Smith confessed to the burglaries claiming a special reason for entering old houses. He said people living in new homes are away and do not have much cash.
The Senate approved extending federal campaign spending limits to primaries caucuses and nomination conventions by a 50 to 30 vote. Supporters urged broadening controls further while critics warned of overreach.
PORTLAND Ore thick snow crippled city life with up to a foot shutting stores and schools and stranding hundreds in downtown hotels. Three deaths were attributed to the storm while icy east winds from the Columbia River gorge continued to funnel in. Forecasters warned the cover could deepen tonight with freezing rain and ice.
Hillsboro. Sheriff Harold Whitten was expelled from Post No 1036 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars after a raid on the post club rooms. Two slot machines were seized and the post paid a $100 fine. Whitten said he received a letter declaring him an undesirable member.
