The State Board of Education approved a consolidation study of northern Athens County schools, initiated by the Nelsonville and Glouster boards. The proposal seeks evaluation of merging options and impacts for the two districts.
State education boards urged placing study recommendations on the primary or general ballot this year. They seek to consolidate districts Glouster Nelsonville Chauncey Dover Trimble York, per a 1961 Ohio University survey. Also approved an 1963 budget of $5.1 million for 88 county boards.

Ohio science teachers plan a two day program in Columbus to honor encourage and educate outstanding high school science students. The Ohio Science Education Association with over 600 members will run the statewide event February 22 and 23.
East German leader Ulbricht voiced support for Khrushchev's Cuba policy at the sixth congress, praising the Soviet line against China and noting it spared the world nuclear war. Khrushchev reiterated war not needed to advance communism. In Berlin, Khrushchev signaled restraint. In Santa Monica, Douglas Aircraft fired 22 workers for refusing union dues under a shop agreement.
The J. R. Evans Funeral Home in Akron had its license revoked by the State Board of Embalmers and Funeral Directors after nine unburied infant corpses were found last June. The board cited immoral conduct following a public hearing held November 14.
