Gov. James A. Rhodes, Ohio's 61st governor, urged fiscal integrity and job growth to foster a strong economic climate. He emphasized reducing waste, expanding education and welfare, and producing employment within a stable tax structure.
In Lomé a military revolt ousts President Sylvanus Olympio and leaves two men as possible new leaders Nicolas Grunitsky and Idris sou Antoine Meatchi. Grunitsky, Olympio’s brother in law, is asked to form a government after exile in Dahomey. Meatchi, ex opposition figure, rumored back from Ghana. Olympio is reported killed outside the U.S. Embassy.
Winter ice and snow drifts sweep the nation with freezing temperatures and widespread hazards. Forty deaths are blamed on exposure and accidents as property damage climbs into the millions. Milton L. Farber, 60, Columbus attorney and author, dies of a cerebral hemorrhage. Roads in the northeast remain partly snow covered with slippery spots as highways warn of continued hazards.
The United Nations planned to send a special emissary to Kolwezi to force President Moise Tshombe to surrender the Katanga stronghold or face a UN attack. If negotiations fail, a Gurkha battalion could seize Kolwezi and Tshombe might be tried as a war criminal for threats to destroy mining facilities and the power dam. Tshombe had returned to Kolwezi after a brief trip to Northern Rhodesia amid Cabinet dissent and warnings of a last-ditch defense.
Ohio eight city average weekly gross earnings edged up from October to November with Cleveland Dayton and Youngstown each up one percent. Canton rose fractionally to 104.77 while Akron Cincinnati and Columbus declined about one percent and Toledo fell slightly. Compared with November 1961 all eight cities posted gains from two to five percent led by Cleveland.
Bowling Green State University will award its first doctor of philosophy degrees at the January 25 commencement exercises. The recipients are Mrs. Linda Welshimer Wagner of Perrysburg and Walter C Daniels of Durham North Carolina.
Dean Jauchius, 41, former Columbus Dispatch staffer, named coordinator of programming and financing in Governor Rhodes administration. He has served as administrative assistant in the state auditor's office since 1957 then on Rhodes campaign staff. Vance H. Trimble, 49, Pulitzer winning national correspondent, named editor of the Kentucky Post and Times Star in Covington, Kentucky.
University of Mississippi officials again suppress student demonstrations against James H Meredith. A tire was slashed on Merediths 1952 automobile outside his dorm after an overnight Memphis trip. Army troops guard the campus constantly. Also, Andra Ainslee, 87, veteran stock actress, died Sunday in Lima Mississippi.
The airlift of 89 Cubans and Cuban-Americans to Miami ended with no plans to resume. Red Cross said future ransom shipments will go by sea and Pan Am will not restart the Miami–Havana service. 68 refugees were Cuban citizens, 21 were Cuban nationals with U S ties.
Washington reports lawmakers clash over proposals to curb filibusters as congress terms begin. A truce held until Kennedy delivers the State of the Union. In Montgomery Alabama Gov elect George Wallace urges segregation during national talks.
An eight year old McArthur boy died Sunday night after being struck by a car driven by J. E. Strong of Wilkesville while he ran toward his mother near 203 S. Market St. in McArthur. The accident occurred about 7 p.m. and was the first traffic fatality in Vinton County in 1963. The boy, Roger Dale Gates, was a third grade pupil at McArthur Elementary School. He died instantly from a crushed skull. Surviving are his parents a brother Ricky 13 a sister Maryland 11 and paternal grandparents Mr and Mrs George Gates. Burial will be in Elk Cemetery after services Wednesday at Wrightsel Funeral Home conducted by Rev Frank Jones. Friends may call after Tuesday noon.
Ohio Governor Michael DiSalle commuted Edythe Klumpp from death to second degree murder, making her parole eligible in seven years. Klumpp’s case, tied to the 1958 Bergen murder, saw two later links of evidence complicate the matter, while the Pardon and Parole Commission denied clemency.
President Kennedy proposed a 13.5 billion income tax cut phased through 1965, with individual rates to drop from 20 91 percent to 14 65 percent and top corporate rate from 52 to 47 percent. He urged Congress to act this year while outlining broader plans including a domestic peace corps Medicare and expanded aid programs. The message also signaled U S and allied progress in the cold war and called for stronger NATO and aid initiatives in Latin America.
Paris reports President Charles de Gaulle rejected Kennedy’s Nassau Polaris missile pact. He said France cannot join the British American agreement and that no one believes France would subscribe to the Bahamas accords.
Ohio Governor DiSalle releases George Markus after 14 months in prison for bribing the late Dover mayor Clifford Froelich. A Tuscarawas County judge and the prosecutor supported the decision on grounds Froelich was found innocent of taking a bribe. Port Clinton notes fishermen braved ice breakup on Lake Erie.
