Ohio Governor Michael V. DiSalle warned Logan Trade Club members of a decade of growth with higher government costs. He likened state expansion to big business and called for honest facts about taxes and waste while predicting 1.2 million more students and 1 million new jobs over ten years.
Elyria Ohio highway director and former mayor J Grant Wheys says he will not run for Congress. He backs J William McCray, Lorain County prosecutor, as the Democratic candidate. McCray faces Republican A D Baumhart Jr who will not seek re election. State Sen Charles A Mosher plans to run for the GOP nomination.
President Eisenhower formally nominates William Howard Taft III son of the late Senator Robert Taft to be consul general in the U S Foreign Service Taft previously held a recess appointment to head the U S consulate at Lorenca Marques Mozambique Southeast Africa
The Rev. Warren M. Hulburt has resigned as pastor of the First Baptist Church in Middleport to take a similar post at the First Baptist Church of Steubenville. He will leave Middleport February 15 and start in Steubenville on February 16. Hulburt cited two years of progress and growth at Middleport and noted improvements to the church’s facilities. He is a Youngstown native, alumnus of the University of Miami and Southern Baptist Seminary, and is married with two children.
China blames the United States and Japan for planning a military pact to prepare aggression and war. Peiping Radio quotes its foreign ministry saying the move under the guise of revising the Japan US security treaty is an extremely serious step by Japanese reactionaries and U S imperialists.
An ice floe carrying Station Charley near Barrow Alaska split again as Brig. Gen. Gordon H. Austin and Capt. James F Smith inspected the site 400 miles northwest of Barrow. Evacuation of 16 personnel was considered with aim to complete by Friday as two thirds of equipment already removed.

Premier Nikita Khrushchev announced a 1.2 million man cut in the Soviet armed forces within a year or two without waiting for Western disarmament. He said the army would drop from 3,623,000 to 2,423,000, stop manned bomber production, and shift air power to rockets as nuclear weapons grow.
An Athens Ohio man Frank Downing Smith 61 was sentenced in Concord North Carolina for breaking and entering larceny and possession of burglary tools. He pleaded no contest to charges and received 2 to 5 years for burglary tools B and larceny and 3 to 5 years for breaking and entering, with sentences consecutive. The case arose when he was found looting the office of attorney Clyde Propst Jr. and E T Bost Jr a former state representative.
CAPE CANAVERAL The Air Force says the Thor intermediate range ballistic missile test program is finished and will be used in three shots to test a new space engine. If successful the engine could boost small space science payloads into orbit and deep space.
The Ohio Fair Managers Assn winds up its 35th annual convention with the Best Ohio Fair contest and banquet. Delegates heard ideas on fair operation as city annexation upsets rural versus city board balance. others urged review of constitutions by appointing legislative committees.
The body of George Flickinger, 32, of Zanesville, a Cambridge State Hospital patient missing since Monday, was found in a small creek near the hospital Wednesday night. Coroner W A Larrick ruled death by own action. Some clothing was found along the stream bank.
Washington reports John L. Lewis resigns after a 40 year tenure as president of the United Mine Workers Union. At 88 he plans an active life while Thomas Kennedy 72 steps in as the new UMW president after a board meeting this afternoon.
Indications that Senator John F Kennedy may skip the April Wisconsin primary bolster Senator Hubert H Humphrey for the Democratic nomination. Robert Kennedy said his brother should stay out of Wisconsin and not challenge in primaries, signaling a potential convention path for Humphrey with a strong showing in Minnesota and nearby states. Stevenson is not a candidate and could receive only scattered votes.
Lima and Arequipa receive emergency supplies after Peru's second major quake in a month. At least 63 killed and 200 injured as 60 percent of Arequipa and suburbs are destroyed. Five planeloads of medical supplies prepared with President Prado and Premier Beltran to tour the area.
Mrs Harold Gordon of Saginaw Michigan withdrew six hundred dollars from a bank for a Florida vacation. In the holiday rush the envelope was sealed and mailed to Time Inc Chicago by mistake. Time traced the money through bank wrappers and returned it this week.
Town Manager Allen L. Torrey announced motorists may park for free Friday as Amherst aims to close 1959 without a traffic fatality. No charges will be collected at parking meters.
In Middletown the Armco Steel Corp and the Armco Employees Independent Federation announce a new contract described as substantially better than other unions deals. President J Ed Winsor says it includes fringe benefits and runs to June 1962. About 5000 Armco workers at Middletown and Hamilton are covered. The federation did not take part in the steelworkers strike.
In Salt Lake City a government official said the United States may succeed in manned space flights this year. Richard E. Horner, associate administrator of NASA, described the missions as training affairs of about 190 miles range.
Hubert Williams 32 ex city policeman found guilty of first degree manslaughter for the October 27 slaying of Mrs. Margaret Leath 31 at his trailer home in Washington Court House A seven by five jury delivered the verdict late Wednesday night The count carries a possible 1 to 20 year sentence Williams contended the shooting was accidental A lie detector test indicated Williams was telling the truth
A fairly strong earthquake shook central Japan today including Tokyo causing buildings to sway and lamps to fall. No immediate damage or casualties were reported as the Central Meteorological Agency logged intensity at four near the epicenter in southern Ibaraki Prefecture, about 30 miles northeast of Tokyo.
