Sophomore Persuades Brokers to Buy Stock Without Cash

New York AP report details Philadelphia student Abraham H Treff a St Josephs College attendee who says six major brokerage houses bought about $200000 of stock in his name without his cash or signature. He says the aim was to expose lax NYSE enforcement and broker practice. He claimed confirmations showed owed amounts but no physical stock delivery and notes indicated longer settlement before sale. The NYSE acknowledged documented evidence and referred the matter to the SEC after a stock-watch flag. Treff maintained he left only about $400 in his bank account to support purchases.
