Four people died as a gunfight erupted between deputies and Black residents in Baton Rouge after police moved to clear a street rally. Authorities blamed outsiders and Muslims amid arrests and a dusk to dawn curfew.
Ohio will staff every ward in 25 mental institutions around the clock by February end. About 400 hospital attendants will be hired, boosting total employment eight percent from 6,600. Additional hires fall across Taxation and Natural Resources, with recalls of laid off workers from Gov. Gilligan’s austerity program.
In New Hampshire Ashbrook gains strong support from William Loeb owner of the Union Leader. The Ohio congressman receives extensive favorable coverage including front page endorsements and repeated editorials praising his conservative candidacy against Nixon.
Howard Hughes collaborator Clifford Irving insists the seven reporters who spoke with a voice claiming to be Hughes were duped. Irving, McGraw-Hill approved author, says the taped voice in Los Angeles was an excellent forgery and maintains the manuscript is authentic.
Sen. Hubert H. Humphrey starts his bid for the Democratic nomination from Florida and Pennsylvania primaries. He vows to carry no one else’s burdens while urging a total U S withdrawal from South Vietnam. He faces a large field including Muskie Hartke Jackson McGovern Chisholm Lindsay McCarthy and Wallace. Muskie also campaigns from Florida to Wisconsin gaining Stevenson III endorsement in Illinois.
Chinese Foreign Minister Chen Yin dies of cancer at 70 after a memorial attended by over 1,500 in Peking. Missing from the mourners list was Defense Minister Lin Piao amid reports of purge and power shift during the Cultural Revolution.
North Vietnam’s dry season offensive scored major gains in northern and southern Laos. Ten Laotian battalions retreated from Ban Nhik after a two hour battle that broke an enemy siege, leaving the Bolovens plateau under North Vietnamese control.
