John H. Mohler of Albany retired from the county infirmary board after nine years and LS Woodworth of Millfield was appointed to replace him. John McLaughlin of Capleville became president and William James of Glouster was chosen secretary as the board reorganized at Chauncey. The new members were hosted by X W Baker. attendees included Mohler, McLaughlin, James, Woodworth, and Miss Carrie Clester who provided music.

Joseph S. Higgins, born June 30 1825 in Athens Township, was killed instantly by a falling tree while working alone in the woods south of Tawny. His sons Daniel and Cyrus found him near the stump, the tree’s direction misjudged in fading light. A longtime farmer and public servant, Higgins served as township assessor, county commissioner, and leader in the Athens County Agricultural Society, with a noted role in turnpike road improvements. He leaves a wife and nine children. The funeral was conducted at his residence with church services and burial in the new cemetery.

William Johnson met with a wood chopping accident at his home on Friday evening and struck his eye. He was examined Saturday and was alarmed by the seriousness of the injury. Sight had not returned by Saturday afternoon and a permanent loss of the eye is feared.
Mrs Carrie Goodrich Kelley a former Athens resident and daughter of Mrs Joanna Goodrich, married Dr William Kelley of Missouri in Shanghai. The couple met during missionary work in Japan and China, endured Boxer era danger, and plan to study local language before continuing missions in Hunan.
Mrs Nancy Border Ayers of Athens aged 104, born in Monroe county West Virginia in 1797, is the oldest resident in Athens county. She moved to Athens two years ago to live with her son C B Ayres after a long life in West Virginia. Mother of eight, she has thirty eight grandchildren and forty seven great grandchildren. her husband died twenty five years ago. Her age and activity are noted despite some hearing and sight impairment.
News from Lavenor reports Miss Nellie Morris, 19, of Hackney, Morgan County, severely attacked by Walter Weinstock, 20, on a country road near a post office. He slashed her throat with a razor. neighbors intervened, Weinstock jailed at McConnelsville. Morris's condition remains critical. mob rumors and sheriff warnings shape tense, potential vigilante action. Benjamin Morris, the father, rushed home from Marietta and remains by his daughter.
