Community leaders report a clothing firm declined to locate in Nelsonville citing a minimum 10 000 population and competition for female labor. Despite strong preliminary approvals and broad newspaper support, the firm would not move to the Sylvania Building on Route 216.
East Germany demands Willy Brandt personally participate in any new negotiations to reopen the Berlin wall. The condition undermines renewed Christmas pass talks that ended Jan 5 after 17 days of West Berliners visiting relatives in the Soviet sector. Deputy Premier Willi Stoph conveyed the demand in a letter.

A seven room home of Rev. and Mrs. Oakey H. Cart on Route 7 at Hobson burned Monday night with an estimated loss of 7500. Firemen traced the blaze to a downstairs bathroom, destroying interior stock worth 5000 and contents 2500. Mrs. Cart heard crackling, fled barefoot to a neighbor, and called the fire department after being unable to reach a telephone.
Alice Williams aged 100 died Monday night in a Syracuse rest home. She celebrated her 100th birthday on January 1 and was born in Clintonville Pennsylvania. A longtime Syracuse resident and member of the Middleport United Presbyterian Church, she was believed the oldest Meigs County resident.

A five month old girl, Leslie Rae Smith, died en route to Children’s Hospital after a private ambulance transport from the Nelsonville home at 1018 High Street. The fire destroyed the three room frame house about 1:35 p.m. Firefighters arrived within minutes, using booster hoses and hydrant lines. Investigators suspect the coal heating stove, with draft and damper shut, caused the blaze.
Washington reports a renewed crisis in the five year old railroad work rules dispute as federal mediators resume talks with railroad leaders and five operating brotherhoods after a cooling off period. A Feb. 25 deadline for secondary issues threatens a nationwide rail strike.
