FDA launches a three year program to assess safety and efficacy of hundreds of thousands of nonprescription drugs. A NAS review of 420 OTC drugs found about 25 percent effective, mirroring a 1966 prescription drug review where 15 percent failed and 35 percent were possibly effective.
FDA Commissioner Charles C. Edwards says the agency will use expert panels to set standards for at least 26 OTC drug classes including antacids laxatives and analgesics. Panels will define active ingredients labeling warnings and use directions with reforms required for reformulation approval or market withdrawal. The first panel on antacids should form by March 1 with standards due about July.
