TV Games Kept People At Home On Holiday Football
CHICAGO AP says televised football over Christmas and New Year weekends kept people home, contributing to lower holiday traffic death tolls. Officials noted 1966 may surpass 1965’s record 49,000 deaths, with 43,110 deaths through October and potential final counts above 52,000. Col. Chiaramonte credited law enforcement for a low holiday fatality rate and 5,051 traffic arrests during the period. Ohio safety director Nelson linked TV bowl-game rounds to reduced road deaths, while Christmas three-day toll reached 584 and New Year toll 469. 1966 year totals showed lighter travel in many regions, with 930 billion miles driven nationwide and motor vehicle registrations up to 96 million. California and Texas posted record tolls among 18 states reporting, Texas nearing 3,400 deaths for 1966 after late adjustments.
