Athletic Director Phog Allen Foretells Downfall of Big Time Football
Kansas University director Phog Allen, a basketball man, foresees football’s decline due to commercial excess and rising costs. He cites 640 colleges playing, 80 profitable, 560 not. argues subsidies and tax limits threaten paid coaching staffs, and notes student demand for football persists despite financial strain. He warns of shifting finances and asks where support for subsidized athletics will come from as war and costs bite. He also questions funding sources for star players and coach salaries.
