Commissioners Divided In Initial Vote

Logan-Thomas Van Curen was elected president of the Hocking County commissioners Tuesday but failed to gain Democrat Howard Blum's support. The vote hinged on Republican J. Russell Young, with Blum abstaining. Vice president election went to Blum, with Van Curen voting for him. The board reappointed clerk, courthouse custodian, dog warden, and an apiary inspector, but split on two weekly meetings. Young and Van Curen favored twice-weekly meetings. Blum abstained. Salary and appointment details: Clerk Mrs. Fanchion Mount $240 monthly. Custodian Charles Waugh $365. Dog warden James Leonard $270 plus mileage. Diary inspector Fred Hugh $300 yearly plus mileage. Mileage allowed 10 cents per mile up to 500 miles, then 5 cents. Postmaster Vaughn Collins urged county mapping and road sign program. Engineer Clyde Underwood said mapping already underway.

Sheriff Keeps Deputy With Engineer Funds

Logan-Hocking County officials preserved a full patrol by using engineer auto and gasoline tax funds to pay Deputy Clarence Nihiser. The $8,500 road patrol appropriation includes a new cruiser and keeps the four shifts’ traffic direction at four Route 33 plants. Sheriff Hartman warned of losses in traffic direction and road patrol without the funds as the 1967 budget faced reductions.
