Cleveland January 3 The killer of Mrs Ruth Elizabeth Steese in Beachwood Village is described by two witnesses as wearing a lumber jacket and visored cap. A Kirtland resident provided the first clue saying the slayer fled east toward Geauga Lake and Ashtabula Counties. The Cleveland Society for the Blind where Steese worked offered a $1000 reward.
Fire gutted a dry timber farmhouse near Shelby, Ohio, killing Mr. and Mrs. James Miller and their seven children, ages 9 to an infant. Miller escaped, led rescuers to the scene, and later died of burns after pointing to the blaze and collapsing.
Washington January 3 Congress moves to fast track the domestic allotment plan for farm relief with Speaker Garner aiming for a end of week vote. Democratic leaders expect passage with broad backing from farm groups and Roosevelt aides. The plan promises large bounties for wheat cotton hogs and tobacco producers cutting output aimed to restore prewar farmer income. The Agriculture Committee chair notes proposed payments would give farmers returns near prewar levels with specific rates cited as 10 cent wheat and 12 cent cotton.

Herman Specht a former mayor of Benwood Va died from injuries after a home-made cannon exploded while he celebrated the new year. A fragment struck him in the head fracturing his skull leading to his death yesterday authorities said.
