New England and Mid Atlantic regions faced heavy snow and freezing temperatures as storms disabled buses and trolleys, cutting off towns in Massachusetts New York and New Jersey. Snow accumulations clogged streets while officials worked to clear routes and restore supplies as temperatures teetered near zero locally.
U.P plants announce immediate hiring while hoping to settle with workers who walked off. Peon employees walkout followed by support from Thomas Paley of the United Automotive Federal Labor Union. A PAR proposal offers a return to work with a raise until April 4 as a settlement.
Springfield official L Brown announces a new aged pension program. He says 27.1 percent of residents will receive aid and that 70,000 people are involved. The plan envisions 30,000 more to be added next month.
In a decisive ruling the M Rating is held, with officials noting no legislative sanction or judicial tolerance for acts that would destroy or wreck faith and relationships. The decision references contracts and foreign embargos affecting gold and sport affairs, amid calls for stability.

Karl Harris of Chesterhill Pearl Wallace of Todds and John Miller of Westland were injured when their car was forced off the highway returning from a basketball tournament at MacConnellville. The crash occurred near the Sylvanus Williams home as a second car struck them. driver identity unknown. The Harris sedan wrecked on a culvert. Wallace suffered a broken arm and dislocated finger. Harris had cuts and scalp wounds and Miller was severely bruised.
Plans for a campaign to win United States recognition of the Manchoukuo government are under way as preparations proceed for Henry Pu Yi to be enthroned as emperor. Ceremonies are set for Thursday in the mushroom capital on the plains of Central Manchuria.
Cleveland reports another fatal aviation crash during a disaster filled week. Albert J. Harmon, a former local high school student, died when his Michigan National Guard plane crashed, adding to the week’s list of casualties.
Washington Feb 27. Senators studied a Federal Trade Commission report on how large pay for corporate officers may have contributed to the 1929 stock crash and its influence on stalling a rapid return to prosperity.
Three Bulgarian communists acquitted in December of complicity in the Reichstag fire and held by police since then were released today according to an official announcement.

Adjutant General Frank D. Henderson announced new Civil Works Administration quotas effective March 2, reducing statewide CWA workers to about 168,000. Counties listed include Athens 1,423, Gallia 48, Fairfield 328, Hocking 761, Jackson 1,08, Meigs 990, Perry 1,008, Washington 98, with drivers of teams and trucks included. federal projects and emergency education excluded. New CWA projects were approved in Meigs and nearby counties.
Chesterhill field notes report a frame home of Mr and Mrs Andrew Schofield southeast of town damaged by a Saturday attic fire believed to be from a faulty flue. Firefighters faced access issues and fought the blaze until it was extinguished, with substantial property loss before help arrived.
Newark report states 67 year old Mrs Anna Alexander died after her dress caught fire from a kitchen stove causing fatal burns.
Athens County auditor J Clyde Edmundson announced that women workers on the discontinued CWS sewing projects will receive $771.55 in overdue wages dating back to January 15. Checks may be collected at the relief office.
A speeding Pennsylvania Railroad passenger train plunged from an elevated track near Penn Station Pittsburgh killing ten and injuring more than 37. Among the dead were Frank Dravo president of Dravo Construction Co. and Mrs W Miller Wardrop wife of the Pennsylvan ia Railroad Company assistant manager. The train from Akron to Pittsburgh derailed after hitting likely a split rail, with cars toppled and lights out as it struck the street below.
Several candidates for the supervisor of the state liquor store in A passed the written examination at Columbus and are eligible to attend a protest at the Lafayette Hotel in Marietta at 4:30 a.m. tomorrow. The notices came from the State Civil Service Commission at Columbus. Names of those tested were not announced. It was believed some did not pass.
Carl Crowley the Post Office Department solicitor told the Senate Air Mail Committee that former Postmaster General Walter F Brown and a group of airline operators lobbied the McNary-Watres Air Mail Act through Congress He testified that Farley relied on evidence showing contractors and Brown worked together to push the bill.
In Cleveland on February 27 the probate court filed the will of Mrs. Marion C. Tyler wife of W. B. Tyler. The document sets aside trust funds totaling more than 3 million dollars for Lakeside Hospital and Western Reserve University.
President Roosevelt reaffirmed his opposition to broad veteran bonus provisions as a House Senate clash spreads through the economy program debates. He warned Speaker Rainey he would veto any cash bonus measure, even as the Senate moved to restore about 60 million dollars in pensions for Spanish War veterans and dependents.

Both plan August primary nominations. Gibson served in World War and works for Bank of Athens. Cook with Peoples Bank for 12 years and former Nelsonville city treasurer.
Former State Senator Walter G. Nickels of New Philadelphia defended the Muskingum Conservancy Project in Millersburg saying it is a nonpolitical effort aimed at flood control for the southern district and water conservancy for the north. He asserted sponsors acted for state and community needs, not political gain.
The NRA National Compliance Board will quickly investigate claims Ford Motor Company refuses to bargain with employees. Hearing to be held late this week at the Chester plant in Pennsylvania. General Hugh S. Johnson said NRA is not afraid of Henry Ford.

Will Rogers writes from New York praising John J McGraw as a fine character and influential figure in promoting the Giants and New York baseball. He recalls McGraw’s role in drawing crowds for world series and league games and describes him as sweet and a good friend.
Washington February 27. Senate bill introduced by Senator Dill would create a seven member federal communications commission to regulate telephone telegraph radio and cable. The measure seeks to unify oversight of services under the old Radio and Interstate Commerce commissions. It would permit the new body to scrutinize service affiliates and require competitive bidding when warranted in the public interest.
Mrs. Ethel Bird Little wife of Lee Little aged 61 died Sunday morning at her Frost area home of pneumonia. Funeral services set for 1 PM Wednesday at Troy Baptist Church with Rev R L Derrick presiding. She was a Baptist Church member and is survived by a sister and a brother.
St Louis police killed two gang members during a gun battle in Michael Accardi’s apartment while investigating an attempted extortion of 2300 dollars. One detective was wounded in the confrontation.
Noah Carr superintendent and his wife matron at Fayette County Home have sent a denial to the state civil service commission. They refute accusations by county commissioners regarding conduct of affairs at the home.

Athena County real estate taxes begin Thursday at the Courthouse office of Treasurer G. D. Gorham. This first half year collection was delayed since December. For the first time part payments are allowed with delinquent penalties applying only to unpaid portions. The collection runs through April 18, and extensions beyond closing date are not guaranteed this year.
New York report details William F. McGee a bucket shop operator who rose to Broadway fame in 1920s as his firm E. M. Fuller & Co failed leaving creditors more than 4 million dollars. The sensational rise and abrupt collapse left thousands of customers affected and McGee dead.
