Leaders of the coal industry and United Mine Workers meet to discuss wage rates and differentials with a proposed extension of contracts to March 31. Delegates from multiple districts attend as talks aim to avoid a labor disruption and set a 650 000-member lobby for action.
Baroness Renate Von Natzmer and Frau Benita Von Falkenhayn were beheaded in Berlin for betraying military secrets. The official 2:50 pm announcement noted Hitler refused mercy. A third prisoner, Baron George Sosnowski, received a life sentence alongside Fraulein Von Jena. Falkenhayn used her first husband’s name at death.
Athens County and Nelsonville authorities questioned two Carbon Hill men, John and Elmer Lehman, after a fatal hit sk id on Route 31 near Nelsonville. Wes Burley, 38, of Floodwood, died when struck by a vehicle. a Columbus woman suffered a broken arm in related crashes as three cars wrecked. Investigators said the Lehman brothers saw a truck like the one involved strike Burley and pursued it toward Beaumont without obtaining the license number. No charges were filed yet and questioning continued with prosecuting attorney Harold Rose.
Washington Feb 18 The House Committee on Military Affairs urges a pay as you fight policy for future wars. It supports a 100 percent levy on excess war profits and higher taxes while warning against drafting all wealth. The report argues such plans would socialize and communize American property and industry.
Two young pilots, Marquis George De Monteverde and Count Alfred De Monteverde, both in their early twenties, plan a flight from New York to Syria following the route of Paul Codos and Maurine Rossi. George Wedekind, manager of the flying service, announced the plan after correspondence with the pair.
Rear Admiral Byrd’s Antarctic expedition returned to civilization in Dunedin New Zealand on February 14. Its second in command Dr Thomas C Poulter soon married Miss Helen Gray in a ceremony reported after the voyage.
Rear Admiral Richard E. Byrd and the Antarctic expedition team arrived in Dunedin New Zealand amid safe return. Byrd thanked Providence for four major expeditions without loss of life and announced a confirmed link between Marie Byrd Land and the main Antarctic continent based on their observations.
William Green of the American Federation of Labor pledged to mobilize AFL support for full unionization of the auto industry in Northern Ohio. Speaking to about 6,000 workers in Cleveland and Toledo, he urged removing the company union and predicted a thirty hour week with pay unchanged in Toledo.
Butler Pennsylvania February 18 two Pittsburgh men died when a rebuilt airplane stalled at 300 feet and crashed into a muddy pasture near Valencia. Charlie Heim 37 who rebuilt the craft and William Fugent died within moments as the ship skidded 30 feet on the slick ground.
Dwight Huffman age 22 of Brice and Gale Seevers age 24 of Marietta among four men who escaped Fairfield County jail last Friday and were recaptured near their homes in Lancaster.
In El Centro California two men were killed and about 400 shots fired during a violent clash between striking lettuce workers and non strikers at Martin Wahls lettuce packing shed. Eldred Hamaker and Paul Knight died amid hand to hand fighting as state officers used tear gas to disperse the mob. Imperial Valley appealed for more officers to prevent martial law and Gov. Merriam mobilized state motorcycle officers.
Jackson February 18 Thomas T Plummer a coal miner was brought to trial for first degree murder in the slaying of 76 year old landlord John Steele who allegedly paid attention to Plummers 16 year old daughter Steele was struck with a coal auger during a fight after Plummer reported being shot and bearing four bullet wounds in his arm Prosecutor Benson L Owens is expected to seek the death penalty.
Pittsburgh February 18. A dispute centers on whether bank and coal company papers about stock sales should be admitted as evidence in Andrew W Mellon’s income tax case. The government says Mellon owes over 3 million dollars for 1931. Mellon argues he is owed a small refund instead due to charitable gifts disallowed by the IRS.
Cincinnati authorities probe an outbreak of cerebro-spinal meningitis that since January 1 has killed 16 people among 50 hospitalized patients. Dr H Har Lan Langdon notes the toll nears 1934’s year total as victims come from the transient service bureau.
Desperate inmates fled the granite reformatory as 18 prisoners remained at large. Women and children were used as shields while a guard was shot, and 13 others joined the Sunday escape. Warden Mrs Waters faced gunfire while sheriffs hunted across the short grass plains.

Addison Edgar, 65, injured by a shotgun wound to the head, was found unconscious at the Edgars Produce Company poultry house on Cavison Avenue last Wednesday. He is in improved condition at Sheltering Arms Hospital. His son Paul, owner, says the gun discharged accidentally after Edgar, assistant chief engineer at Ohio University heating plant, stopped there each morning. Paul did not report the incident to police.
