Frozen Europe faced a dire outlook as its worst winter of the 20th century left at least 611 dead and crops worth hundreds of millions of dollars ruined, signaling an impending food shortage across several nations.
Ohio treasurer Roger W. Tracy said a Bank of Gallipolis note issued August 7 1899 cannot be cashed. The bank collapsed in 1842 after a brief run with forgery and embezzlement cases tied to a Farrington officer. The note’s issuer later described as Adventurers from New York had capital stock of 50000 and circulation totaling 59000.
BERLIN As Navy and Army officials moved to locate three missing privates Pfc Sidney Ray Sparks 23 of Tenesee was captured in East Berlin and handed to Army authorities. Sparks escaped from a West Berlin guardhouse on December 4 1951 with two comrades and faced charges of AWOL theft and assault. East German authorities said the trio sought political asylum three days after the escape. Austrian prisoners returning from Soviet camps last June claimed Sparks was in a Soviet camp after being arrested in Berlin in 1951. Army hospital officials in West Berlin declined comment.
Democratic Governor Frank Lausche says he is not seeking the presidential nomination and would remain a favorite son with delegates under control of bosses. He notes Eisenhower’s reelection decision could influence his path as he attends meetings on state government problems.
Senator Lehman says he will hand over evidence of "questionable pressure tactics" used to back a New York natural gas bill. The measure would exempt rural gas producers from direct federal regulation and is under scrutiny by Senate investigators.
President Eisenhower issued an executive order designing a new draft priority. The order reshapes call-up categories, placing childless 25 year olds at the top and extending exemptions for men over 26 and fathers. It creates four registrant groups for 24 months of training with oldest non fathers called first.

Nelsonville driver Cecil E. Seames reports a taxicab theft last night with money taken. Suspect Searles surrendered to Sheriff Donald Conaway at about 2:30 a.m. at Athins County. Driver Paul J. Stump describes threat with a knife and theft of seven to eight dollars. The cab was later found in a ditch near Caldwell with minor damage.
Public hearing in Columbus on proposed changes to fireproof construction standards as part of Ohio building code revision. Hearings planned for March April and May. James Easton of Akron leads drafting, aiming to simplify use by consolidating institutional building standards into a single chapter.
In Hiroshima Japan a new agency was formed to campaign for a ban on thermonuclear weapons. About 1400 people attended the first meeting signaling strong public interest in nuclear disarmament.
Herbert Brucker editor of the Hartford Courant argued at the Ohio State University Press Institute that treason and subversion threaten liberty. He warned against trimming constitutional rights out of fear, stressing the need to defend freedom and dissent within American tradition.
New York Times reports a GOP maneuver to persuade Eisenhower to accept an alternate veep running mate if he seeks a second term. The plan, described by James Reston, would move Nixon to a cabinet post, with no White House support yet.

A Cleveland medical columnist reports that cures for cancer are not far off. Dr. Walter Alvarez says a future method may kill cancer in humans without harming patients. He notes a low fat diet could defend against arterial hardening and mentions a drug that may reduce fat deposits aiding artery walls.
Adlai E Stevenson campaigns in Salt Lake City meeting local Democrats and leaders from eight western states to discuss regional politics. He plans informal talks with University of Utah Utah State Agricultural College and Brigham Young University students then speaks at a Democratic fundraising dinner and ends with a breakfast for Utah party workers.
Liming up teenage oaths, nine youths were jailed for the gun slaying of 17 year old Kenneth Sloboda. Clement Macis, 15, received 16 years the heaviest sentence while eight others drew 1 to 5 years up to 4 to 14 years. Five gang members testified for the prosecution and await later sentencing. Macis was 14 when the gang sought revenge last July 1. Also noted is a separate item on a missing American plane hunted by at least 14 search planes in Montreal with Whitey Dahl aboard.
