Civil War Soldier James Brownlee Dies at 86
James Brownlee died Friday at his State Street home after a lengthy illness due to old age and war injuries. Born February 10 1815 in Washington County Pennsylvania he moved to Ohio as a child and spent his life near Athens. He served in the 40th Ohio Infantry enlisting in 1861 but was discharged after one year for disability. He was twice married Eliza Cook then Martha Farrington and is survived by three children. A longtime Columbus G A R member he once cared for the old cemetery grounds and chose his burial site. Known as Uncle Jimmy he was remembered as jovial and honest. Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon led by Rev Cyrus Rose with G A R pail bearers and escort.
