The Messenger will publish a daily School Bulletin Board to help teachers and students during winter school closures. Superintendents in area districts will supply items ranging from extracurricular updates to classroom assignments. teachers must submit information through superintendents for publication.
Athens City Schools will open Monday for books and assignments only with rest of week closed. Federal Hocking Local Schools plan to stay open unless the gas company forces a closure. Alexander Local Schools will offer limited hours for elementary and high school to distribute materials, with no buses for elementary students. Several other districts face closures or partial openings with decisions pending. Educational TV programs and a school information exchange hotline are announced. University plans to support education if closures persist. Health and recreation programs for children begin soon with limited registration.
Thousands of businesses in 24 western Ohio counties face extended gas curtailments as Dayton Power and Light extends maintenance level cuts to March 19. Columbia Gas Transmission and CG&E also slow supply, with notices sent to 5,370 large customers outlining allowed gas usage to prevent irreversible damage, though freezing and property harm could still occur.
