Joe Hershberger, a 57 year old Amish farmer in Kidron Ohio, says the winter is harsher but life goes on with self sufficiency. The Amish heat with wood and rely on animals for warmth while roads ice up and milk trucks stall.
Unemployment fell to 7.3 percent in January from 7.8 percent in December as weather and a large drop in the labor force pushed the rate down. Labor force decline, estimated up to 1.5 million by weather, contributed to the drop, with most categories showing declines and farm workers decreasing by over 150,000. Total employment rose slightly to about 85.5 million, while the labor force stood near 95.5 million.
Snow cover and dry unfrozen ground in Kentucky Indiana and Ohio reduce flood risk for the Ohio River and its tributaries hydrologist Thomas McPhillips says.
