Christmas Eve tornadoes kill at least ten across Deep South

Mississippi officials report at least six deaths in the state including a 7 year old boy in Holly Springs. Tennessee and Arkansas each confirmed fatalities as storms raked Mississippi to Georgia. Dozens were injured, homes and cars destroyed, power outages widespread, and rescue crews searched debris amid a rare Christmastime outbreak.

Joy of Toys event brings gifts to Kilvert and Athens County

In Kilvert and Athens County, the Joy of Toys distribution drew Sheriff Rodney Smith and volunteers including his wife Brenda. Gifts came from a $9,500 Explorers program donation plus new items for Kilvert families, with six Explorers aiding large gift handouts and raffles featuring a Tonka fire engine and bicycles. The Kilvert Community Center, run by volunteers, hosted the event after reopening in July and remains self-sufficient through venue rentals.

County approves 1.9 million carryover and 7.5 percent budget rise

The county's General Fund budget is fully funded with a 1.9 million carryover from last year, exceeding prior carryover by 400 thousand. Revenue stems from 2.25 million in real estate and mobile home taxes and 10.74 million from other sources mainly county sales tax share. The plan raises expenditures about 7.5 percent from last year's 13.79 million, with higher salary and benefit costs a key driver. An MOU with Integrated Services for Behavioral Health funds job coaching and training for up to 20 TANF recipients, aiming to place them in self sufficiency via Ohio Works First cash aid.

Pike County deputy charged in December shooting case

Pike County Sheriff Charles Reader terminated deputy Jenkins after a December off-duty shooting that left a neighbor dead. Jenkins faces involuntary manslaughter charges and additional counts from a grand jury indictment. A hearing will determine his status, with Jenkins currently on leave, not on duty, and not allowed to carry a firearm. Stephanie Stanley reports for the Pike County News Watchman.
