Dismal Swamp Canal Passed to Government Ownership
The Dismal Swamp Canal, long owned by the Dismal Swamp Company, is sold to the government in 1890 after a foreclosure. Virginia ceded Lake Drummond rights for perpetual fresh water use to operate the canal locks. The lake’s height reduced maintenance costs, and the canal is to be kept at least 12 feet deep, enabling larger vessels and safer passage for commercial ships and yachts, linking inland waterways coast to coast.
