Across the globe Christians held Christmas Eve services as millions toured community churches and Bethlehem pilgrims prayed for peace. Eisenhower urged goodwill in Washington while unrest persisted in New York and various international tensions persisted from Israel to Korea.
A Greyhound bus collided with two trucks on a foggy wet hill near Pulaski Tennessee killing seven and injuring 12. The bus bound from Birmingham to Cincinnati burst into flames after stopping in a gully seven miles south of town. most passengers escaped before the fire. The driver, honored last year for 15 years of safe driving, operated the 40 passenger coach.
Thrifty Valley View officials start the new year with a 70000 surplus in the village treasury. The 1250 residents have no sewer or water systems and few improved roads. Tax consultant J Gordon McKay praises the saving crowd and notes the surplus grew over four or five years.
Walter Miller Jr. 17 was hunting near his parents' home when a rifle discharged by accident. A bullet struck him in the temple and he died Tuesday, authorities said.

Pilots at American Airlines considered a federal mediated settlement on wages hours sick leave and vacation as their strike neared a decision today. American accepted the peace proposal hoping pilots would follow. The walkout grounded a major route while Eastern Air Lines faced separate delays from a separate strike.
Judge Anne X. Alpern of Pittsburgh is chosen as the state’s first woman attorney general, selected by Gov elect David L. Lawrence. Appointment takes effect Jan 20 at Lawrence’s inauguration. Alpern previously served nine years as Pittsburgh city solicitor and was elected to Allegheny County Common Pleas Court in 1953.
A Newark woman writes to Santa via Columbus City Hall’s mailbox, asking for someone to place her under his tree. The letter asks if someone might know her plight and help her find a desirable place in life this holiday season.
Snow flurries spread from Minnesota to the Great Lakes and New England this morning with continuing snow likely through Christmas. Much of the region sees pre winter storms, with the heaviest falls along Lake Superior shore. Houghton Michigan reports five inches for a total of forty two inches on the ground.
Cincinnati Western Hills High School suspended four fraternities from activities amid hazing crackdown. The four fraternities, with about 150 members, are accused by Principal Arthur Harlovie of engaging in practices that might endanger a boy's health.
The United States and New Zealand agreed to cooperate for another year in scientific exploration in Antarctica.

The Air Force announced a successful 4000 mile Atlas missile flight across the Atlantic six days after a predecessor launched the nation’s largest satellite. Col John Powers said the test went smoothly, the first appearance of the new intercontinental “C series” with modifications likely reducing payload about 100 pounds.
In the week ended Dec 20 the Bureau of Unemployment Compensation recorded 101,492 continuing claims and 20,099 new claims. The figures compared with 94,165 continuing and 21,579 new claims the prior week, and with December 1957 averages of 103,912 continuing and 25,080 new claims. There were 3,097 new claimants for extended benefits and 32,909 continued to receive 13 weeks of extended benefits.
Four judge panel denies lowering the $20,000 bail for Stuart Sutor accused of piloting a plane load of weapons stolen from Canton Ohio to Cuban rebels. Judge Harry E Watkins presided in the U S District Court in Fairmont West Virginia.
A 28 year old wife and mother, Frances Lollar, was abducted from her Columbus home by a masked intruder Tuesday night. She fought back with a carving knife, was raped at a deserted location, then returned home and taken to hospital for shock. The 10 month old son remained in the house. It was the second such assault in the city that week following the killing of Janice Porter during a home invasion.

At least 16 mushroom farmers remained entombed after a massive rock collapse in a nine acre tunnel maze near Zichen-Zussen-Bolder Belgium. Three people were confirmed dead as rescue efforts continued.
