Kaiser Unveils 60-Foot Plate Stretching Machine at Ravenswood
Kaiser Aluminum and Chemical Corp. puts a massive 30 million pound plate stretcher into operation at its Ravenswood West Virginia works. The machine grips ends of thick aluminum plate and stretches up to four feet, refining internal stress for heat treated alloys used in marine construction chemical processing and military applications. The device, with top and bottom heads each weighing 132 tons, operates on a parallel hydraulic system and sits on a rail guided by eight wheels per side.
