Sheriff Explorers Host Large Toy Giveaway in Athens
Between early November and early December the Athens County Sheriff's Office and its Explorers program raised 9500 dollars at Texas Roadhouse and WalMart in Athens to fund a Toys for Tots like event. The annual toy drive at the Athens Community Center served 390 children from six districts with activity toys and a family meal courtesy of Texas Roadhouse. Deputy Jimmy Childs coordinated the effort with Susie Gilkey a D A R E adviser, and all 12 Explorers helped parents choose gifts, buying discounted items from WalMart. The event far surpassed last year’s 254 children as supplies allowed.

Bigs and Littles Celebrate Holidays at Athens Party
About 250 Bigs and Littles gathered at the Athens Community Center for BBBS Athens annual holiday party. A gift tree at Walmart on East State Street fed dozens of names, later fulfilled by volunteers from the Sheriff's Office and last minute shoppers. Haylee, 12, and her mentor Jackie VanDyke shared joy at crafts tables, while organizers urged more Big volunteers to sustain community mentorship.
