Athens council rejects pay raises for elected officials
Athens City Council failed to approve third readings for salary increases for City Solicitor William O. Rowland Mayor Kenneth W. Sands and Municipal Judge John Newcomb after silent votes. The body did advance a second reading for raises for city firemen and policemen and discussed a street and garbage workers proposal, with attendance by five retiring council members. The session ended amid tense relations and a transfer-of-funds vote.
