A survey of Wall Street banking and bond houses shows Christmas bonuses for 1922 workers up 15 to 20 percent over last year as profits and business rebound. Large brokerage houses expect generous shares of yearly receipts for employees, with some firms allotting 8 to 12 percent of profits and one bank setting a gift at 25 percent of salary.
Marion Illinois December 21 The state rests its case today with five defendants tied to mob killings. Otis Clark led a victim to Meakes Crossing John Carnaghi and Dr O F Shipman testified as shooters Leava Mann and Bert Grace linked to cemetery executions Peter Hiller described as firing in the powerhouse woods and Grace allegedly boasted of the cemetery killings. The state builds a strong case while the defense readies a mounting counterattack expected to begin with cautious arguments.
Irv ing Kahldone, 19, sought by city and county officials after leaving a jury during a trial for uttering a check to defraud in Judge Bernon's court. He vanished when court reassembled. His counsel and mother denied knowing his whereabouts as a note to his mother warned authorities of trouble if pursued.
In Mansfield Ohio on December 21 a coasting accident killed two boys. Glenn Bricker aged 13 and Orlo Sams aged 10, cousins, collided with an automobile driven by Charles Witchey. Bricker died at once from a fractured skull. Sams died later at the general hospital. Witchey stopped after seeing the boys on sleds and attempting to avoid them.
Columbus December 21 Chairman T. J. Duffy of the state industry commission declined Governor Elect Dovahey’s offer to name him state director of industrial relations. He said he can serve best by staying in his present position to defend the workmen’s compensation law and improve its provisions and administration.
War rents totaling 669560.18 for state aid to school districts were mailed to county superintendents. Payments await February settlements. Athens county totals 45543.26 with numerous townships and villages listed among recipient areas.
In Marion Illinois on December 21 Hugh Willis a state board member of the United Mine Workers testified again that he joined the murder mob at the Herrin powerhouse woods on June 22 just before 14 captives from the Lester strip mine were shot. Local hardware dealers also testified to guns and ammunition being removed the day before the murders and Willis wiring orders for armament.
Columbus inspector Lindsey swears warrants for arrest of grocers for alleged violation of the cold storage law requiring placards bearing Wholesome Cold Storage Food to be displayed beside cold storage eyes offered for sale.
William F. Ferry of Glouster files suit in Athens county common pleas court seeking 2500 for damages from a September 8 1921 wreck near Palo when an engine and seven coal cars plunged 48 feet. Ferry an engineer on the engine claims unsafe trestle and lack of bridge repairs. The case is first of two suits. another plaintiff W F McCance seeks 25000 and is a principal witness.

Halifax December 21 The United States steamship West Hardaway drifts helplessly about the Atlantic about 500 miles east of Halifax with fuel exhausted and temperatures below zero. For two days the Argus tugged at the 6 000 ton hulk to tow her to safety but heavy seas and freezing lines snapped the hawsers. The Argus abandoned the ship and proceeded to New York. The Hardaway is bound from England to New York with iron seamen aboard.
